By Stan Olson, Head of Reference Services, Lane Memorial LibraryLane Memorial Library now has a brand-new Canon 500 digital microfilm scanner. This will make it much easier for anyone to read or print articles from sources on microfilm (like back issues of the Atlantic News).
Unfortunately, our searchable index of local newspapers only goes back as far as 1999. Before that, you would need to know the date an article appeared to have any chance of finding it. That’s why we are calling for volunteers.
Join Lane Library’s newspaper indexing project and help restore public access to over 100 years of local people and events. You will learn basic indexing and database skills and see the results of your work posted on the library website.
Volunteering takes 5-10 hours a week of your time, computer literacy, and a certain “head for indexing” (do you like to organize your clothes or CDs, for example?) To volunteer or find out more about the project, please call Lane Library at 926-3368.
