Children’s Book Week started in 1919 to promote better books for children. It was organized by the American Booksellers Association with the support of librarians and scout leaders. The first slogan was “More Books in the Home.” This year’s theme is “Free to Read.” To further celebrate this week before Thanksgiving, the State of New Hampshire has a new book award.
The state of New Hampshire opened its Center for the Book in May 2003. This Center is located at the State Library in Concord. As part of the Center’s activities, a new book award is being introduced this year – it is the Ladybug Picture Book Award. Voting for the best will be the week of Children’s Book Week.
The Ladybug Picture Book Award, named for our state insect, will be an award given to the book that the children of the state choose. A list of 12 books was chosen in the spring by a committee of Children’s Librarians. This list is available in the children’s room at the Lane Memorial Library. The library has purchased 1-2 copies of each book. Start reading them now so that a decision can be made in time for voting!
Voting will take place during Children’s Book Week, November 17- 23, 2003. A ballot can be picked up in the children’s room and the winning book will be announced after the first of the year.
The books that have been nominated for the first Ladybug Picture Book Award are:
- Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson
- Duck on a Bike by David Shannon
- Epossumondas by Coleen Salley
- Head, Body, Legs by Won-Ldy Paye
- I stink by Kate Mc Mullan
- New York’s Bravest by Mary Pope Osborn
- Old MacDonald had a Woodshop by Lisa Shulman
- Olivia by Ian Falconer
- Please, Baby, Please by Spike Lee
- Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner
- A story for Bear by Dennis Haseley
- What’s the Time, Grandma Wolf? By Ken Brown
Story times will be going on during Children’s Book Week to share the books just prior to voting. They will be held on Tuesday November 18th at 9:30 AM. There will also be a Toddler Story time on Monday November 17th at 9:30 AM. Call the children’s room at 926-4729 for registration. Don’t forget about the two story times on Thursday, November 20th at 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM with our quilt theme.
